LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completion of the course the students must be able to:
- Understand and interpret simple chemical phenomena.
- Know some of the fundamentals chemical properties of characteristic chemical elements and their compounds, and their role in nature, everyday use and common industrial applications.
- Solve methodically simple Chemistry problems.
- Use safely the laboratory equipment to carry out simple experiments.

COURSE CONTENT
Theoretical part
Α. General Chemistry:
- Unit systems. Atomic structure. Periodical system of the elements.
- Nomenclature of inorganic compounds.
- Chemical reactions, chemical equations and stoichiometry.
- Chemical bonds.
- Molecular geometry.
- Introduction to chemical thermodynamics.
- Introduction to the states of matter.
- Introduction to the ideal, non-ideal solutions and the colloidal systems.
- Introduction to chemical kinetics.
- Chemical equilibrium in acids, bases, salts and complex compounds.
Β. Inorganic Chemistry (Chemistry of selected chemical elements and their compounds).
- Groups 1, 2, 13 of the Periodic table. Properties of the elements Na, K, Mg, Ca, Ba, B, Al and their compounds.
- Groups 14,15,16,17 of the Periodic table. Properties of the elements C, Si, Pb, N, P, As, O, S, F, Cl, Br, I and their compounds.
- Groups 6, 7, 8, 8, 10, 11, 12 of the Periodic table. Properties of the elements Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ag, Zn, Cd, Hg and their compounds.
Laboratory part
1.Labware – materials – reagents. Safety in the laboratory.
2.The analytical balance – Treatment of experimental measurements.
3.Density measurements.
4.Solutions: preparation and dilution of solutions from a concentrated and from solid substances.
5.Groups of chemical reactions – Stoichiometry of a reaction – Reactions of the Main Groups elements.
6.Solubility of the substances.
7.Phase separation – Drying of samples.
8.Colligative properties of solutions: molar mass determination of a substance from the freezing point depression of its solutions.
9.Chemical kinetics and balance – Le Chatelier’s principle.
10.Chemical equilbrium – pH measurement.
11.Buffer solutions.
12.Qualitative analysis of the Groups I, II, III cations.
13.Qualitative analysis of characteristic anions.
