Maria Kyraleou is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Wine, Vine and Beverage Sciences of the University of West Attica since 2023. She graduated from the Department of Agriculture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and holds a MSc in Viticulture & Oenology from the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). She earned her PhD in Agricultural Sciences from AUA in 2016, focusing on the ‘Effect of viticulture practices on compounds affecting the sensory characteristics of red wines’. Engaging in research projects, she collaborated with wineries across diverse Greek regions. In 2017, supported by a scholarship from the State Scholarship Foundation of Greece, she conducted her postdoctoral research on the ‘Determination of the phenolic composition of grapes from Greek red V. vinifera varieties’ at the Laboratory of Oenology of the AUA. As a Postdoctoral researcher, she contributed to the ‘Whiskey Terroir’ project at the Agriculture and Food Development Authority of Ireland – Teagasc (Moorepark, Fermoy) in collaboration with Waterford Distillery and funded by Enterprise Ireland (Innovation Partnership). With over 40 journal articles and proceedings presented at international and national conferences, her research primarily focuses on evaluating the quality of wines and alcoholic beverages during production. Specific areas of interest include monitoring the production process, developing analytical methods and detecting chemical compounds that influence the sensory perception and determine the origin of wine and alcoholic beverages.
