LEARNING RESULTS

After the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • To evaluate modern attack prediction models and protection methods against various pathogens and be able to apply the most appropriate of them.
  • To know the biology and symptoms of the various vine pathogens and to be able to choose the most suitable method of combating them.
  • To choose the most appropriate agricultural pesticides according to their chemical composition and effectiveness so as to preserve the protection of the environment and the consumer.
  • To analyze and compare the advantages and disadvantages of the various control systems currently applied in viticulture and to be able to judge which one will apply depending on the destination of the produced product.

COURSE CONTENT

Theoretical part

  1. Vine diseases: Fungal, prokaryotic, viral and non-infectious diseases. Description of the symptomatology, etiology, biology and ecology of pathogens, as well as the epidemiology and control of the respective diseases.
  2. Enemies of the vine: Morphology, biology, ecology, symptomatology of insect-enemies of the vine: types of damage, economic importance, methods and means of dealing with the enemies of the vine (Thrips, phylloxera, coccoids, crickets, earwigs and other leaf-eating and wood-eating beetles, eudemida and other lepidoptera, diptera). Morphology, biology,
    symptomatology, ecology and control of nematodes (facultative parasites, obligate ectoparasites, obligate ecto-endoparasites, obligate endoparasites), mites and rodents.
  3. Prediction: Attack prediction models. Control and sampling techniques. Plant production protection methods.
  4. Plant protection: Chemical plant protection. Agricultural drugs (historical review, classification). Agricultural drug preparations (forms, ingredients, standardization). Legislation on agricultural drugs. Virological action of pesticides (mechanisms, selectivity). Use of pesticides (selection, application, precautions, problems). Agricultural chemicals and the environment
    (residues and factors affecting the residuality of agricultural chemicals in grapes, soil, water).
  5. Integrated plant protection of grapevine: Agricultural drugs and combined treatment. Principles and strategies of integrated combat. Epidemiological evidence and analysis of the basic principles for successful and economical reduction of pest and disease damage. Cultivation measures to reduce damage. Treating diseases with resistant varieties. Genetic control and mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction.
  6. Biological vine plant protection: Biological protective products. Biological treatment of enemies and diseases. Their biology is also beneficial.
